If you already have lenses, or someone you know has lenses, buy the camera that can use those lenses. Think that your choice will be probably forever, since you will buy lenses and accessories for that brand, so you can upgrade to the next camera model but changing brands is really expensive. Both brands are excellent, so try both cameras and feel which one you're most comfortable with. I personally use Canon (a 40D) and I'm reasonably happy, but I have no arguments against Nikon, people who have Nikon are also reasonably happy.

If everything else fails, choose for the price of camera and the lenses you'll most probably buy in the near future.

Canon because you already have a canon camera so wouldn't have to buy new lenses or learn a whole new camera setup.

Personalmente uso nikon, le trovo macchine molto più comode per molti aspetti, posizione dei comandi, menù ecc.
In questo caso però assolutamente opterei per la 40D, in fondo è una generazione avanti rispetto alla D200, ha una migliore gestione del rumore e varie caratteristiche non presenti nella D200 ( quest'ultima sembra essere molto avida di batteria oltretutto ). Considerando anche che hai già canon e quindi possiedi già degli obiettivi non avrei così tanti dubbi, buon acquisto in ogni caso
